Revolutionizing Logistics in India: Top Trends Driving Business Operations in 2023

The logistics industry in India is benefitting from technological advancements, policy initiatives, and infrastructure capex in 2023. Logistics is integral to economic growth and any improvements in the country’s logistics ecosystem has business positive outcomes – ranging from operational efficiency to expanding supplier networks to boosting last-mile-reach to meet market demand. Further, applied tech innovation and data-driven insights can allow companies to optimize their supply chains, allocate resources more effectively, and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

India’s logistics industry has achieved remarkable progress, highlighted by the country’s rise of six spots in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI). This improvement is credited to various factors, such as technology innovation, data-driven decision-making, and policy initiatives aimed at facilitating world-class infrastructure.

Earlier in the year, the government increased the Union Budget allocation for capital investment by 33 percent, amounting to INR 10 trillion, for 2023-24. This development has been warmly welcomed by the logistics industry as it is expected to bolster India’s position in the global supply chain by prioritizing infrastructure development.

Improving logistics performance can be a crucial factor in a country’s economic growth, enabling businesses to enhance their trade competitiveness, reduce expenses, and increase supply chain efficiency. This not only boosts productivity and customer satisfaction but also attracts foreign investment by creating a favorable environment for companies to operate in.

By minimizing lead times, cutting transportation costs, and improving inventory management, logistics improvements help businesses optimize their operations and increase profits.

What Reverse Logistics

Reverse logistics is the process of moving goods from their final destination back to the supplier. It can be used for products that are defective, surplus, or returned by customers. Reverse logistics helps companies reduce costs, recover lost revenue, and improve customer service.

For instance, In the beverage industry, companies are using reverse logistics to keep their tap containers from being wasted. The process starts with producing beverages in bulk and then bottling or canning them for retail sale when they’re ready. This requires many steps, including planning transportation, managing shipping loads, and cleaning the containers.

There are 5 main steps in the reverse logistics process:

Process the Return: When a consumer wants to return an item, they should be able with a process that includes providing identification and signing for the package. The company will then authorize your refund or replace any faulty goods in order of what’s been ordered from them before being sent back out again.

Deal with Returns: To ensure that your products are both returned and recycled efficiently, you should consider using a centralized processing center. The first step in returning an item is inspecting it for any damage or stains on the exterior of whichever container was used when shipping

Keep Returns Moving: Sending repairable products to the repair department might help you reduce your daily waste.

Repair: After inspecting the returned item/equipment and assessing whether or not it can be fixed, it should be moved to the repair area.

Recycle: Selling any sellable components should be attempted if feasible.

In an environment with higher demands from consumers and a constant push to innovate, the logistics industry is undergoing major changes.

Logistics in India is one of the world’s largest industries, valued at about $215 billion and contributing to about 14 percent of the nation’s economy with an annual growth rate of 10.5 percent. The industry is comprised of transportation (60 percent), warehousing (25 percent), freight forwarding (10 percent), and value-added logistics (5 percent). However, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered significant disruptions in the corporate landscape, and the logistics industry has not remained outside of the purview of these disruptions.

With the combined effect of consumers’ ever-higher demands, strong growth in the direct-to-consumer (D2C) start-up ecosystem (accelerated by the pandemic), and the constant push to innovate and adopt new technologies, the logistics industry is undergoing major changes. For example, India’s road transportation industry was unorganized before, but now, it is shifting toward contactless operations and digitalization.

With quick commerce and deliver-on-demand expected to be a game-changer for the industry, it’s time for shippers to embrace technology to build the capabilities they need to stay in the game in this fast-paced world.

The Central Challenges For Logistics In 2023 – And How To Solve Them With The Right Tools

As per a Fortune Magazine report, almost 94% of the Fortune 1000 companies faced pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions. Most logistics leaders experienced these disruptions first-hand, as COVID-19 exposed the weaknesses of traditional workflows in the existing supply chain logistics.

For instance, lack of upstream and downstream visibility, legacy demand management processes, lack of resilience to demand variability, and unexpected outages due to reliance on manual effort across logistics operations had shattered supply chain during the first wave of lockdowns.

It became clear that companies needed to optimize supply chain management and logistics (SCML) quickly. For many, the answer came from a new generation of SAP for logistics and non-SAP tools, which promised to address challenges such as inconsistent tracking and increasing transportation costs. These tools enabled them to build truly resilient and agile supply chains.

While these tools are flexible and can adopt to the enterprise’s varying needs, businesses must understand the ups and downs of extensively tweaking software capabilities to fit their needs. While solution providers like SAP provide industry-specific best practices content to help organizations thrive on the benefits of standardization, most will need to find a middle path between standardization and customization to compete effectively in today’s business ecosystem.

Best practices in logistics sustainability

Facing greater pressure to be more sustainable, companies are looking for ways to make their supply chains more environmentally friendly. The best practices listed here can help.

Long gone are the days when corporate sustainability was seen as a concern chiefly for companies that branded themselves as “green” or “socially conscious.” Corporate sustainability has now become mainstream in both the service and manufacturing sectors.

Since 2000, there has been much published in both the academic and business press on various logistics sustainability topics.1 Some of that published work includes case studies of companies that initiated ways to reduce energy consumption or waste,2 to emit lower levels of pollution,3 increase recycling or reuse of products and packaging,4 and “do more with less.”5 In some instances, companies themselves have published guides to sustainability for use by others to develop their own sustainability programs. For example, Nike has created a guidebook on the principles of circular design, supplemented by case studies from itself and other companies, and makes it freely available on its website.6

The volume of material published on sustainability in the supply chain reflects what the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Transportation & Logistics and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) found after conducting multiple surveys of thousands of logistics and supply chain professionals: Companies are feeling pressure from many stakeholders to become more sustainable.7 One of the key takeaways from the research is that sustainability is becoming more common as a part of the duties and responsibilities of many logistics and supply chain professionals. Other research studies have further supported the results of the MIT studies.8

After combing through this published work and conducting company interviews of our own, we sought to provide a collection of best practices for sustainability in logistics. (See sidebar, “About this study.”) For this article series, we chose those practices that we felt could be implemented by multiple organizations and accomplished within a brief period of time and/or at a reasonable cost.

As sustainability is such a broad concept, it is important to identify how it will be employed in this article. In general, sustainability involves adopting a perspective that considers the triple bottom line of “people, planet, and profits.” Or as, a recent white paper from the Institute for Supply Management said, “sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”9

While all of logistics management has sustainability implications, the major structural components of logistics management selected for inclusion in this first article on “best practices” in sustainability include: (1) purchasing/procurement; (2) transportation; and (3) warehousing.

A follow-up article will examine sustainability best practices in three additional areas of logistics management, including: (1) packaging; (2) reverse logistics; and (3) the use of technology.
